1,595 live medical sales postings at 138 employers name a clinical or allied-health background as one they will take. That is 21% of 7,630 postings with a description, and it is the largest route in after outside sales. Most of it is in the operating room and the cath lab, which is where a clinician already knows the room.
The posting's qualifications name a clinical or allied-health credential or background as the candidate's own — a nursing license, surgical or cardiovascular technologist, respiratory therapist, medical laboratory technologist, operating-room experience and the like. Naming clinicians as the people the role sells to does not count, and 'clinical sales experience' is medical selling rather than a clinical background. General 'healthcare experience' is not counted.
A posting is counted only when its own text names the background as an accepted or invited route into the role. An employer that hires from it without saying so is not counted, so absence here is not evidence of anything. Of the 1,595 postings, 424 state an overall experience requirement of one year or less.
Every employer with 5 or more live postings naming it, most first. The share is of that employer's own postings in the population.

On this board, yes. A Clinical Specialist supports the rep in the room — case coverage, training the surgical team on the device, troubleshooting — and sits in the commercial organization, usually with a territory. It is the most common first title for somebody coming out of the OR or the cath lab, and the board lists it on the sales side. The exception is Clinical Educator: employers hire that as a nurse, to teach clinicians, and it is left off this board as a clinical job whatever department it reports into.
Every Clinical Specialist role open now.
Read the qualifications line, because postings differ and the board does not summarize this. Some Clinical Specialist postings ask for an active license as a qualification; most say nothing about keeping it. What every one of them asks for is the procedure knowledge the license stands for — which is the reason a clinical background is named as a route in at all.
The salary guide gives the median advertised base for the whole board and for the operating room and cath lab, computed from live postings that publish a range. Two things to hold beside it: a first Clinical Specialist role is usually advertised below what a tenured rep earns at plan, and device postings quote base salary where the commission is not in the number. Compare the base to your clinical base, not to a rep's on-target figure.
The break-in guide has a section for clinicians, and the operating room and cath lab pages list every open role in the rooms you already work in.
US medical sales postings live on the board that carry a job description, excluding non-promotional field roles such as Field Reimbursement Manager. A posting with no description cannot name a background and is left out of the denominator rather than counted as naming none.
A posting is counted under a background when its own text names that background as an accepted or invited route into the role, with no unwaived mandatory medical-sales requirement blocking that route. Other credentials and experience conditions still apply. An employer that hires from a background without saying so in the posting is not counted, so absence is not evidence of anything.
An employer is listed under a background once at least the stated minimum number of its postings name it. The share beside it is of that employer's postings in the population, and is a description of how they write their advertisements rather than of who they hire.
One background from the career changers report, which covers all four. 21% of the population names this background. Counted on September 22, 2026. The board is rewritten twice a day, so this is a snapshot. Cite the date with the number.
On this board, a Clinical Specialist role belongs when the posting supports a commercial medical sales team or product adoption. The work can involve educating clinicians, demonstrating products and supporting procedures rather than owning a sales quota. The title alone does not prove a role is commercial or suitable for every nurse. Check the stated responsibilities, credentials, territory and travel requirements in the employer posting.
